Weekend Room Edit: Get the Look!

I love Otto's face in this picture. It's like he's mad at me for potentially taking an itty bitty piece of the spotlight away from him. He wanted the lovely Erin McGinn all to himself, and I can't really say that I blame him (she's fabulous). Anywho! I'm so glad I got to share my first Weekend Room Edit on SMP Living today! If you are coming from there, welcome! But what's a Weekend Room Edit you ask? Let me explain...

I don't think there is a single person out there that doesn't want to love how their home looks. It is your sanctuary, after all. But I do think there are plenty of people out there that aren't exactly sure how to make it happen, or perhaps they think they can't afford a full overhaul. So I decided to challenge myself one snowy weekend (when my hand was broken and I was going a bit stir crazy) to completely change one of our guest rooms into a space I actually liked. The only rule? I was only allowed to buy one thing - a can of paint.

I'm totally embarrassed to show the before picture, because the room is pretty awful. It's so mismatched, it doesn't make a lick of sense and that paint color hurts my heart. But I really want to show it as proof that life isn't always beautifully styled, even for people that are constantly swimming in a sea of pretty. I bet even Emily Henderson has a room that she hasn't tackled yet. We are all human, and honestly, furnishing and decorating your entire home in one fail swoop is pretty darn expensive not to mention time consuming. So give yourself a break, I mean look at this before - you aren't alone.

Have you recovered yet? Are we still friends? Good. Since we are opening our souls today, I'll also confess I've never painted a room before. Yep. It's true. Andrew's Aunt happens to be a talented painter, so we've lucked out in that department. However, I had to stick to that little rule of not purchasing anything other than a can of paint (and Andrew was going to hold me to it, trust me), so I was on my own.

I decided to paint the room Benjamin Moore Super White, because that's what we painted the walls in our master bedroom (other than the statement wall of course, that's my favorite color - Hale Navy), and I want to be able to easily change or modify it when we adopt a herd of golden retrievers (kidding, family) or have kids. Plus it's super fresh and well, white. Hence the name, I suppose.

Then I just edited away. Another confession, I love to throw things out (don't worry - we donate the stuff they'll take). Clutter is my enemy. If it doesn't have a space or a job in our home, it's out. That's my rule. So I LOVE this part. I worked with the headboards, because, well, I couldn't buy new headboards, and they matched that large bench in the corner. I then just shopped around our house for the artwork, lamp shade, duvets, and pillows. And the room totally transformed by Sunday.

So what do you think? Have you tackled something similar? Or maybe this gave you a kick in the pants to give it a shot this weekend - whatever the case, tag your photos #weekendroomedit on instagram so I can see all of your work! Or, drop me an email and we can work on one together! Happy decorating!
